Favorite Music Reviews: A New Series (hopefully the City Paper won’t steal my idea this time)

Earlier today, I tried starting a blog post series of my favorite–note, not best–songs. The first one was going to be Reverend Gary Davis’ I am the Light of this World (which would have been followed by about eight other Davis songs; I sweat him hard), but the limits of blog software led me to [...]

Orange You Tired of Bad Oranges?

When was the last time you had a good orange? Go ahead, comment.
Out of my most recent bunch, one of the five were good (but not great), and that is better than usual. I have not had an excellent orange in years.
Is something happening to our orange supply? Am I choosing the wrong type of [...]

Rock Has No Soul, But Does It Have Flow?

Thanks to an incredibly generous HD, I was able to see Vampire Weekend when they played Rock ‘n’ Roll Hotel in early February. Given all the hype, I expected them to both bore and hurt, but I was surprised (yeah, yeah, the album is on my To Listen list).
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, but quickly [...]

Updike’s Rules For Reviewing

More to remind me than anything else:

1. Try to understand what the author wished to do, and do not blame him for not achieving what he did not attempt.
2. Give him enough direct quotation–at least one extended passage–of the book’s prose so the review’s reader can form his own impression, can get his own taste.
3. [...]

Bonde do Role, Plastic Little, and Edie Sedgwick at Black Cat (20070911)

I came for Edie Sedgwick and left for Bonde do Role. I had never heard Edie Sedgwick before, but was lured in by the drummer who is also in S PRCSS and Antelope. Turns out that, this iteration at least, Edie Sedgwick had Jason Hutto of The Aquarium playing keys. They sounded a little rough, [...]

The Aquarium And More At the Black Cat (20070910)

I love The Aquarium. They give me hope that maybe the guitar will become extinct in the next few years. Unfortunately, the next band–The Shirks, I believe–curbs you back into reality–a reality where one poorly played guitar is just not enough for most people.

Frans de Waard, Rape Ape, TL0741, and Tone Ghosting at El Possible (20070909)

First, let me take one more opportunity to trash the DC music journalists. Your writing is terrible. Your opinions uninformed. Your tastes reprehensible. Your coverage racist. For good measure, let me throw in a specific critique of your coverage of Sonic Circuits is pathetic, as it consists almost entirely of regurgitating garbage PR releases rather [...]

S PRCSS, Sentai, and DJ People’s Champion at The Hosiery (20070908)

When Sentai started, I was worried I was in for a (bad) session of noise drowning out cheeky electro-twinged synth lines. In the end, though, it was quite good–albeit with some rough edges–and could be (underwhelmingly) described as glitzed punk rock (the good kind).
S PRCSS was, as expected, excellent. The two excellent guitars created some [...]

Hugh Masekela at Planet Arlington (20070901)

Incredible material from an incredible musician. It is amazing anyone pays attention to European(-derived) rhythms.
Wondering why I have not mentioned the other bands at this year’s Planet Arlington? It is because they lacked a certain thing I like to call quality.

Top albums released this year, according to my ear and brain:

Ratatat Classics – That tiger sample not only rocks, but had an influence in fashion.
Knife, The Silent Shout – Simply the best.
Be Your Own Pet Be Your Own Pet – YYYs for the kids!
Sounds, The Dying To Say This To You – Finally, a non-idiotic [...]
